The Square Ball

The Madman from Argentina.

The Square Ball is a football fanzine that celebrates the magic and madness of Leeds United. Established in 1989, it has become woven into the fabric of the football club and the city more widely. Following the appointment of Marcelo Bielsa, an Argentine football coach known as “El Loco”, Leeds United returned to the Premier League after a 16-year absence. To celebrate this achievement, as well as the Bielsa era more broadly, I recreated famous album artwork to narrate the turn in the club's fortunes.

As a contributor to The Square Ball, my variation on the "Demon Days" (2005) album artwork by Gorillaz was used in the fan-magazine's “Campeón Special” (2020). Described as ‘a 228 page celebration of Leeds United’s Championship title win’, thousands of copies were printed, sold, and distributed around the world.
